NEW BERN — The F-11A Tiger became the Navy’s first supersonic fighter in 1954. About 200 were built, and 45 of those served the Blue Angels between 1957 and 1969. Norm Gandia (1936-2021) was a 30 years carrier-based fighter pilot with over 500 carrier landings. He served in Vietnam combat, was a TOPGUN fighter pilot, and completed a tour as a demonstration pilot for the Navy's famed Blue Angels, lead solo No. 5.
